Tech Corner: St. George Welcomes More Tech Incubators to Staten Island!

The topic of Silicon Island returns in this week’s Tech Corner! We believe Staten Island can make a perfect location for commercial use, especially for technology companies. And what perfect place to open up but on the North Shore!

Preferably, this is taking place in the St. George, where the neighborhood is opening up its database to welcome in new incubators that will help high-tech start ups. One of these startups are being opened by our very own college! The College of Staten Island has opened a facility at 60 Bay Street. It will offer new companies office space, workshops, and classes. The concept is to provide resources for potential developers and tech-entrepreneurs to invent using the necessary tools to develop new products and bring them to the market.

It will also provide a cost effective incubator solution that is much cheaper than Manhattan or Brooklyn. Being that it is in St. George, it is one free [Staten Island] ferry ride to Manhattan if needed.

The College of Staten Island has also opened a satellite locations at 120 Stuyvesant Place. This location will begin classes in Fall (2016). These two incubators will create and increase technology based jobs in this borough. It will also be a great opportunity for college students to gain an internship at these facilities for their necessary degree. The goal is to grow the technology industry on Staten Island. In 2014, LaunchPads opened the first coworking space in Staten Island, in the College of Staten Island’s Technology Incubator. Today, it has expanded to double its size. A second space opened on campus, a few building over, with more to come with the focus on media and technology.

These incubators will offer several different memberships for startups: core companies that plan to be using the space five days a week with work on full time jobs, another package for drop-ins to do some work and attend workshops, and another one for virtual groups that will only use the space to attend workshops and have access to the online resources.

RealEstateSINY.com has reported on one of these incubators about a year ago. The TechBox is located at 75 Clinton Street. It was an old warehouse that was renovated and became a space for artist, musicians, professional startups and technology companies! There are 20 spaces with 8 professional tech offices and 12 studios.
